LE DUNE DI SABBIA DELLA VALLE DELLA MORTE. Nel Death Valley National Park (California, USA) vi sono due aree con dune di tipo desertico, formatesi nel corso di migliaia di anni, per azione del vento che spinge la sabbia, finissima, setosa e quasi bianca, fino ai piedi delle montagne: Eureka Dunes nell’estremità nord della valle e Mesquite Dunes,nel centro della Death Valley ad una ventina di km da Furnace Creek, sempre in direzione nord. E’ questa’ultima area che abbiamo visitato durante il nostro tour fotografico dell’ovest americano, per una sessione fotografica al tramonto. In assenza di sentieri chiari, cancellati rapidamente dal vento che livella e modella continuamente la sabbia, dal posteggio, abbiamo seguito una linea quasi retta per raggiungere una delle dune che a noi sembrava la più alta del comprensorio desertico, per posizionare le nostre macchine fotografiche. Camminare sulla sabbia, quando si devono superare delle pendenze, si è rivelato tutt’altro che agevole. Ma la fatica è stata ripagata dall’osservazione del fantastico paesaggio tutto attorno a noi fatto di linee curve, di forme rotondeggianti, di cumuli e valli, di creste e dorsali, disegnate dalla sabbia e dalla luce; più ci si avvicinava all’ora del tramonto, più le ombre delle dune si allungavano, proiettandosi nelle vallette laterali e sulle dune vicine, creando una magnifica atmosfera di chiari e di scuri. Raggiunta una delle dune più alte abbiamo atteso che il sole scendesse verso ovest scattando con il grandangolare ed il teleobiettivo cercando di fermare sul sensore le sensazioni del momento. Le fotografie scelte per questo portfolio, convertite in bianco e nero in postproduzione, spero possano dare un’idea della bellezza del luogo.
THE SAND DUNES OF THE DEATH VALLEY. In Death Valley National Park there are two areas with desert-like dunes, formed over thousands of years, by action of the wind that pushes the sand, fine , silky and almost white, to the foot of the mountains: Eureka Dunes in the north end of the valley and Mesquite Dunes,located in central Death Valley about twenty km far from Furnace Creek, always heading north. It is the latter area that we visited during the photographic tour of the american west, for a photo session at sunset. In the absence of clear paths, quickly erased by the wind leveling and shaping constantly the sand, from the car park, we followed a nearly straight line to reach one of the dunes that seemed to us the highest, to position our cameras. Walking on sand, when you have to pass the slopes, it proved not so easy. But the effort was rewarded by the fantastic scenery all around us, made of curved lines, rounded shapes, mounds and valleys, crests and ridges, drawn by the sand and the light; passing the time and approaching at sunset, the dunes increasingly projected their shadows in the side valleys and on the nearby dunes, creating a magnificent atmosphere of lights and shades. Achieved one of the highest dunes, we waited for the sunset shooting with wide-angle and telephoto, trying to stop on the sensor the emotions of the moment. I hope that the photographs chosen for this portfolio, converted to black and white in post-production, can give you an idea of the beauty of the place.
